How can the power consumption in a family house be so high?

My husband and I lived in our house for 25 years and he was always complaining about our electricity bills. We are now divorced I have had the house and pay all the bills. I got my first electric bill this month and about had a coronary – For 47 days use, 997 KWH! My mother lives nearby and they average about 400 kWh for the same amount of time. There is nothing excessive on here – I have an old refrigerator (older than 15 years old) and I work out of the house this is on my computer all day, but other than that nothing other than one or two light and a TV. I have oil and gas heat and hot water, stove and dryer. The Electric Company has a meter reading and their reading is correct, but as I could with the Electricity from what are essentially two households? Could I pay electricity for someone else? What can I do? Please help!

Why was your first electric bill for 47 days use? Is it because it was changing the name on the account by the divorce? If you do the math, you have used only 21 kWh per day. 997 / 47 days = 21.2 kWh. A normal 30-day change would have been about 636 kilowatt hours at the same rate. 21.2 x 30 = 636th That may still be excessive if you oil and heat have, if your hot water, stove and dryer are all gas. You mentioned one or two light and a TV. Other possible electronic items or not have part, freezer, toaster, toaster, CD-DVD-VCR player, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, curling iron, electric blankets, computers, printers, washing machine, blender, coffee maker, Dishwasher, microwave, blender, water pump (if not a city water), etc. You can have all these elements or these elements you can use very little. I they only bring your attention, because these other objects are often overlooked and fits when you consider all together. I do not know what the U.S. average Consumption per household per month, but my guess is that there are more than 636 kWh per month.
